God goes to school

Some emails stand out amongst the hundreds we get every week. This message from Georgia Snyder was too good to keep to ourselves.
Dear newday team,
I wanted to write a word of encouragement to you with the hope that you could use it to encourage others. Last newday, my friend Rachel and I felt that God was really calling us to become a bigger Christian presence in our school. As a school we had recently gone through a series of tough patches and the general morale was very low. We had one year left at school and we knew that God had really exciting plans for it.
After newday we both started planning a Youth Alpha course and decided to start it in February and run it for half a term. It was a bit scary when we invited everyone in the year, because naturally we thought ‘Why on earth would they want to come to something like this with people like us?!’. But God’s plans never fail, of course, and we ended up with a really great group of people, including people we never expected! It was quite daunting to stand up in front of everyone and talk so openly and boldly about the details of the Christian faith, but knowing that it was all done in God’s strength, not ours, made everything run really smoothly. In small groups we were faced with some fascinating questions and people really got stuck into the debates. It was so incredible seeing God work through everyone over the duration of the course.
The amazing thing was that when the official course ended, everyone wanted it to continue! So we continued to meet each Thursday evening to just hang out together and further strengthen relationships. We have just started doing a Bible study each week to get them more familiar with the Bible and show them its relevance to us today. We are using Rebecca Manley Pippert’s Uncover study which is REALLY GOOD! It is six Bible studies looking at Luke’s Gospel to uncover the true Jesus. It is unbelievable that just a few months ago this group had no clue about Christianity and now they are enjoying doing a Bible study to find out more about Jesus.
The most exciting part of God’s plan is that last summer Rachel and I had started to become quite good friends with this girl in our year. At newday last year, on the night where Adrian Holloway asked us to put a finger in the air to represent someone and pray that they would be standing in the newday tent next year, Rach and I had both prayed for this girl (without even realising we had both chosen her!). Our friendship with her has strengthened and within a year we are now all inseparable. The best thing about being a Christian is that God just calls us to build God-centred relationships, and becoming such good friends with her has got to be the best mission God could have ever given to us! She came along to the Alpha course and still meets with us every Thursday and ... she booked into newday even before anyone from our church did! She is SO excited about newday this year, and Rach and I are completely astounded by the way God’s plan has unfolded. There is now another lad from the Alpha group who is booked in to newday. Praise God!
I hope this is an encouragement, especially for those who feel that they would love to be a brighter Christian witness in their school, but think that they are too shy or are scared of what people will think. NOTHING is impossible for God. Therefore, in God’s strength, NOTHING is impossible for us!
