8 Reasons To Love Newday

Helen of Gracechurch Bromsgrove is attending Newday for the 4th time with her youth this year, and she’s here to tell us all about why she loves it!

The coach is booked and our driver has been briefed to expect a coachload of super excited, singing, chanting, sign-waving people (on the journey there, at least).  With just a few weeks to go, we’re all on countdown and here’s why we’re taking our amazing (because they really are) young people to Newday this year.

  • Waterfights.  Oh yes.  We just love ditching the super-soakers in favour of buckets, washing up bowls and anything else we can find to drench each other (and unsuspecting passers-by, but we didn’t tell you that).  You can’t have a Newday without a waterfight.  It’s just not right.
  • Numb bums.  Don’t forget to bring your cushions to sit on during the meetings.  You’ll regret it otherwise.
  • Meeting with God.  Loads of us have been filled with the Holy Spirit at Newday.  Some have spoken in tongues or heard from God for the first time.  The music’s not bad either.
  • Milkshakes.  You haven’t tasted a milkshake until you’ve tasted a Global café milkshake, though this year they’re relocating to The Cow Shed, exciting times ahead!
  • Life changing preaches.  After Newday 2013 some of our young people went back to school and started a ‘Jesus club’.  Every week for the whole of this year they have answered difficult questions, preached the gospel and generally been incredibly courageous.  I am saluting them.
  • Outreach.  Can you get the t-shirt without going on Outreach?  Absolutely not!  And some of our funniest youth group memories have been made on the Outreach teams (including a man answering a door wearing slightly less than we expected).
  • Old friends and new.  We just love hanging out together.  And, of course, with so many other young people who love Jesus around we can make new friends too.  (NOT romances, of course…)
  • And my personal favourite.  Eavesdropping fascinating midnight tent conversations.  Surely it’s a youth leader’s prerogative?

So, keep counting down because #summeriscoming and very soon we’ll be ditching our home-comforts of hair straighteners and comfy beds for flip flops, wellies and a queue to reach the mirrors!
